More parents are asking for their summer-born children to start school a year later.

Figures from a Freedom of Information request show Brighton and Hove City Council received 45 such requests for the 2024–2025 school year, up from 37 in 2022–2023.

Of these, only one request was refused in 2023.

The figures relate to children who turned four between April and August of each year.

This means these children would normally start Reception in the September after their fourth birthday.

Parents can request their children to delay starting Reception by a year, though the decision is ultimately up to the schools.
