BISMARCK — Minnesota Power has announced plans to build a 45-turbine, 200-megawatt wind farm in west-central North Dakota that, as part of the company’s goal to be largely carbon-free within the next decade, would deliver renewable energy to its nearly 150,000 customers in northeast Minnesota.

According to a Monday, Aug. 4, release from the company, construction of the “Longspur Wind project” is expected to begin in 2026, with operations starting at the end of 2027.

Minnesota Power plans to build it west of Bismarck in Morton and Mercer counties near its existing Bison Wind Energy Center, which has been operational in Oliver and Morton counties for a decade, with 165 turbines providing approximately 500 megawatts in capacity.
