The 99 and a half year old aunt of Princess Diana and her younger brother Earl Spencer died as she approached the century milestone – and would have qualified for a letter from the Queen . ‘“The end of an era,” is the phrase I’ve heard repeatedly today. Indeed it is,’ the 9th Earl Spencer wrote to accompany an image posted to his personal Instagram account when he shared the news in February 2020.

The picture showed a childhood photograph of his aunt and father, John Spencer, playing on the family’s estate of Althorp in 1925, when Anne was five and John was one. Earl Spencer, the father of Lady Kitty and the Spencer sisters, said that the Spencer flag was flying at half-mast at Althorp House to mark the death of his father’s older sister and only sibling.
