The 4-H Premium Sale, a staple of the Lyon County Fair, offers 4-H students a chance to earn hundreds, up to thousands of dollars, as a reward for hard work.
The sale commenced Monday evening. 4-H members sold animals in six categories - poultry, swine, beef, meat goats, sheep, and rabbits. The students purchase the animal months in advance and care for them, making sure they’re ready for show. The money earned through sales is often saved for college or major life purchases.
Ava Karcher, a Cloverleaf 4-H member, sold several chickens for $600. Ty Karcher, Ava’s brother, also sold his flock of chickens for $600. The siblings plan to save their profit for future college costs. Ava and Ty prepared for several months in advance to make sure the chickens were in top condition.
