PHILADELPHIA − The obvious reason in the Eagles trade for cornerback Jakorian Bennett on Aug. 4 was to add depth and competition for the starting job currently being waged between Kelee Ringo and Adoree Jackson.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni wouldn't necessarily admit that on Aug. 5. Bennett was acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker.
But these moves aren't made in a vacuum.
Rather, the trade was made because the Eagles couldn't afford such a big dropoff from Quinyon Mitchell at one cornerback spot to Ringo or Jackson at the other.
The fact that Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said "it's close" when asked about Ringo and Jackson tells you all you need to know about how far both are from Mitchell. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY D
