Of the 21 people affected, six are children under the age of 10 , the Florida Department of Health said in a public alert. And two of the cases led to "severe complications," the department said.
Officials have linked the cases of this bacteria strain to a particular farm. "Sanitation practices in this farm are of particular concern due to the number of cases," the release said.
Raw milk, which is milk that has not been pasteurized, is known to be a potential source of pathogens, including E. coli, listeria , salmonella and avian flu .
And there is an additional level of concern in this outbreak because E. coli infections can be particularly dangerous for young children.
