ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — An updated list of sanctuary jurisdictions published by the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, August 5, includes New York State, New York City, and Rochester. It calls them jurisdictions with policies that "materially impede enforcement of federal immigration statutes and regulations."

The DOJ list defines sanctuary jurisdictions as having policies that intentionally interfere with immigration enforcement. The department stated that it considered several factors, including public declarations, restrictions on sharing information about dates, limiting cooperation with ICE detainers without a judicial warrant, or obstructing jail access for ICE agents. This initial list will be updated as federal authorities gather more information and will be subject to review
