After failing to convince voters to spend more on police services last year, the city of Vancouver is trying again. But this time, the city isn’t asking voters to dig as deep into their pockets.

In November, Vancouver residents will vote on a one-time property tax levy lid lift to hire 13 additional Vancouver police officers, alleviating the understaffed department. The funds would also go toward equipment and vehicles.

Proposition 5 would increase Vancouver’s regular property tax by about 15 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for a maximum regular property tax levy rate of $2.47 per $1,000 for collection in 2026.

That means someone with a $500,000 house — close to the median home price in Clark County —would pay $75 a year for the new officers.
