With their first preseason game on Sunday, the New Orleans Saints gave Spencer Rattler the majority of first-team reps for the second straight day — the greatest indicator yet that there’s been a shift in the team’s quarterback competition.
The battle isn’t over by any means — and rookie Tyler Shough got to run with the starters near the end of practice — but Rattler’s consecutive sessions reflect how he appears to be ahead in this race.
The shift started Sunday when Rattler took the reps on a morning that was supposed to be Jake Haener’s turn to be up first. It continued Tuesday when the Saints reconvened following an off day, and the team again strayed from its previous plan of having one quarterback take the starting reps per day.
