DETROIT – President Trump said he launched his tariff program to force US and foreign manufacturers to build factories in the United States. Instead, in some cases, domestically produced vehicles cost more than those imported from abroad, says Paul Eisenstein, auto writer for Headlight.News.

So far this year, US auto makers have eaten the tariff charges rather than passing them along to US buyers. But with the likes of General Motors and Ford Motor Company reporting losses, due to the tariffs they are forced to pay, Eisenstein says prices will ratchet up by fall, perhaps as much as $10,000 for higher end vehicles, and yes US buyers will be forced to pay for Trump’s tariff program.
