YORK COUNTY, Va. — If you’re a high school football player hoping to take the next step to college football, it’s important to watch out for recruiting scams.
According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, one high school football player’s parent is now out of $20,000 due to a scam of that nature.
Sheriff Ron Montgomery told 13News Now that 40 year-old Malcolm Walker from Atlanta claimed to be a high school football recruiter, and promised the victim’s son football scholarships, meetings with coaches at several major colleges across the country, and more.
“Mr. Walker would tell them last minute that the coaches canceled," Montgomery said. "There was always some excuse for why they weren’t able to go."
