AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott took legal action Tuesday in the wake of House Democrats leaving Texas in the battle over redistricting . The governor filed an emergency petition with the Republican-majority Texas Supreme Court to remove Rep. Gene Wu (D-Houston), who he calls the “ringleader of the derelict Democrats,” from office.

Abbott cited a Writ of Quo Warranto, which legally challenges a person’s right to hold public office.

On Sunday, more than 50 House Democrats fled to Chicago, Boston, and Albany to break quorum. They remain out of Texas, blocking a vote on the GOP-backed redrawn congressional districts that President Donald Trump wants before the 2026 elections to bolster Republican chances of keeping its U.S. House majority.
