(NewsNation) — Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan has switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party.

Duncan officially announced he had moved to the other side of the aisle Tuesday and joined "On Balance" to explain his decision and why he thinks he will be welcomed.

"Donald Trump is that bad, but he's in charge ... Democrats are going through a shift, at least the ones I'm talking to, the ones that are trying to find a way to live outside the extremes. Republicans are camped out in the extreme on the right," Duncan said.

"My gravitational pull to the Democratic Party is it gives me a better chance to be creative. The Democrats have to be the party of ideas. They need to solve real people's problems."
