On a quiet Wednesday morning in March 2024, a report on a contentious policy topic was shaping up to be the big news story of the day.
An Oireachtas committee was preparing to publish a divisive report recommending the law be changed to allow assisted dying. But events took over and, by lunchtime, Leo Varadkar had caught everyone off guard by announcing his resignation at a hastily organised speech on the steps of Government Buildings.
