A new Flagstaff-based nonprofit, EmberSafe Communities , is aiming to raise money to accelerate the development of a high-altitude, solar-powered drone system to improve wildfire detection and response.

Cody Hartman, an engineer and a member of EmberSafe’s board of directors, said the group’s goal is to “move quickly” on technological solutions to the problem of wildland fire. The necessary component technologies already exist, he emphasized, but combining them in a functional package can be a slow process for researchers relying on traditional grant applications.
