A wildfire in France that has burned an area the size of Paris has killed one person and injured at least nine others.

The blaze is the biggest wildfire France has seen this year, spreading over 13,000 hectares and eclipsing the size of the French capital.

The wildfire broke out on Tuesday afternoon in the rural, wooded area of Ribaute near the Spanish border and home to a number of wineries.

An estimated 2,000 firefighters and several water bomber aircraft continued to battle the flames on Wednesday, but authorities said the fire was still spreading quickly and weather conditions were unfavourable.

S even firefighters were among the injured. At least one person was missing.

Jacques Piraux, mayor of the village of Jonquières, said all residents have been evacuated.
