The public is being urged to keep an eye out for the striking Jersey tiger moths, which have seen a surge in numbers. Wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation said that these day-flying moths are thriving as people take part in its annual butterfly count.

The initiative, which finishes on August 10, invites the public to spend 15 minutes noting down butterflies they spot in their gardens, parks or the countryside. This year, the charity is calling on everyone to join what it calls a "nationwide rescue mission" to help Britain's struggling butterfly species.
