A burglary led to a shooting in The Flats neighborhood of Wilmington on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, according to police.

The burglary happened in the 32-hundred block of West 2nd Street near the city/county line earlier in the morning.

Then, around 10 a.m. the alleged burglary suspect 35-year old Tyre Hampton, was shot in the 300 block of Bayard Avenue.

Hampton suffered a graze wound to the head, was treated at the hospital, then taken into custody for the burglary.

69-year old Lamotte Cephas was charged with assault in connection to the shooting.

Cephas is being held at Howard Young Correctional Institution on $25,000 secured bail on the following charges:

Assault (Second Degree)

Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony

Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
