A 34-year-old man who authorities say was beating his own head onto the ground died while in their custody Tuesday, spawning an internal investigation with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release Wednesday that deputies had been called to the 6900 block of Sigley Drive in Edinburg at around 11:57 p.m. Tuesday in response to reports of a man “jumping fences and breaking neighbors’ windows.”

It was at 6915 Playa Del Rey in Edinburg that they found the 34-year-old Gonzalo Reyes Hernandez lying on the driveway “with visible head injuries.”

“Witnesses reported that the individual had been repeatedly striking his head against the concrete driveway. Deputies immediately requested Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to the scene,” the
