An active shooter situation has been confirmed at Fort Stewart military base in Georgia. Authorities are currently assessing casualties, according to Maj. Charles Egan.
The incident took place in the 2nd Brigade area, located off Highway 144 near Sunbury Road, approximately 43 miles southwest of Savannah. In response to the situation, the brigade and Wright Army Airfield, situated about three miles away, have been placed on lockdown.
Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, the Division Public Information Officer, stated that the lockdown is a precautionary measure. The Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) Commander has also ordered a lockdown in the 2ABCT area, which includes both Wright and Evans Army Airfields.
In addition, Fort Stewart's Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools are under lockdown, although officials have indicated there is no immediate threat to the schools.
FSHAA communicated via Facebook, urging personnel to "lock down your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership."
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
