Five soldiers were shot Wednesday during an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart, an Army base in Georgia. The shooter has been apprehended, and there is no ongoing threat to the community, according to officials.
The shooting occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in an area associated with the 3rd Infantry Division’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team. This unit had recently returned from deployment in Europe. Following the incident, the base was placed on lockdown, and the shooter was arrested by 11:35 a.m.
Injured soldiers received initial treatment on-site before being transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care. The status of the injured soldiers has not been disclosed.
As a precaution, multiple schools in Liberty County, where Fort Stewart is located, were also placed on lockdown. The Liberty County School System announced that two elementary schools and a middle school went into a soft lockdown “out of an abundance of caution.” This lockdown coincided with students' first day back after summer break.
Georgia lawmakers expressed their concern and offered prayers for the soldiers and their families. Rep. Buddy Carter, a Republican, urged the public to join him in prayers for the casualties and law enforcement. Sen. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, stated, “I’m heartbroken to see the news of an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart today.”
Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River, covering 438 square miles. It is home to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and supports around 10,000 residents, including active-duty soldiers, family members, and civilian employees. The base has a long history, having opened in 1940 as an anti-aircraft training facility.
This incident marks the second shooting in recent years involving the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team. In December 2022, a soldier shot and killed Sgt. Nathan Hillman at the same unit's building complex.
The situation is still developing, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
