Italy’s government has given the go-ahead for a colossal 3.7km bridge linking Sicily to the mainland, set to be the world’s longest single-span structure, despite decades of debate over potential earthquake risks, eco damage, and mafia concerns. ‌

The £11.5 billion project, backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government , aims to turbocharge the poverty-stricken south, and is set for completion in 2032. ‌
