Containment on the Rosa Fire near the Pinyon Pines community grew to 18% by Wednesday morning, Cal Fire said in its latest update.

Still, a roadblock at the base of Highway 74 in Palm Desert was expected to remain in place until Saturday, preventing residents from returning home. Many expressed growing frustration they could not check on their homes even if they weren't in mandatory evacuation areas. The closure has cut residents off from their pets and even prevented a father from reaching his 13-year-old son, who was home alone at the time the fire broke out.

The size of the fire grew only slightly to 1,658 acres, compared to 1,600 acres reported by Cal Fire on Tuesday evening.
