It was ten years ago that All Nippon Airways (ANA) launched its Star Wars Project , a tie-up with the famous movie franchise. Over time, it launched four aircraft with special Star Wars liveries, with perhaps the most famous being the Boeing 787-9 with a stunning R2-D2 livery. After a decade of entertaining millions of Star Wars fans and aviation enthusiasts alike, that special livery is taking its final flight today.
R2-D2 is the penultimate retirement of a livery within ANA's Star Wars Project, with the final livery (C-3PO) to be retired early next year. The special liveries were such a large commercial success that it inspired multiple other airlines to explore their own Star Wars tie-ups, resulting in a a second wave of special liveries on multiple aircraft types.
