GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) - Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis did not mince words when describing a July incident in which two deputies were shot and injured during a training exercise.

Lewis spoke Wednesday at a press conference addressing a training incident which ended when two deputies were struck by a breaching round from a shotgun.

"I want to be very clear, this incident should have never happened," said Lewis. "Multiple breakdowns in safety protocol, ammunition handling, training procedures led to two of our deputies being injured."

On July 29, Greenville County SWAT units were training in a vacant building on Wade Hampton Boulevard when two deputies were struck by a round.
