PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Arizona is booming, with more people and businesses relocating, a significant amount of power is required to support the state which currently boasts a population of over 7.5 million.

“For the third year in a row we hit a new peak energy demand of more than 8,500 megawatts and that’s reflective of the growth in this state,” said Jill Freret, director of resource integration and fuels for Arizona Public Service (APS).

Freret said Arizona’s current natural gas lines meet our energy needs right now, but soon they won’t be enough; that’s where a new natural gas pipeline being built in Texas comes into play.

“[Arizona’s] system is at maximum capacity, which means that there is no more firm transportation capacity available to meet needs out into the future,” said Freret
