COLUMBUS, Ohio — As families gear up for a new school year, mental health professionals are urging parents to look beyond the supply lists and schedules and focus on what their children may be silently carrying: low self-esteem.
Jon Lucas, a program director at St. Vincent Family Services, said this transition period can shake a child’s confidence and emotional stability.
“Different schools, different classrooms, different teachers, different friend groups, which is difficult, I think even on the parents, but particularly on the kids," Lucas said.
To help children adjust, Lucas recommends starting a consistent routine before school begins. This includes earlier bedtimes and morning schedules. But structure isn't everything, he said. Emotional support is just as important.
He said, "Hav
