Summer in Vermont is the season many families look forward to. It can be a break from the school-year routine, a chance to slow down, or sometimes a time to juggle changing schedules and child care. For kids, it can also be a valuable opportunity to engage in something that supports learning, growth and well-being in a very natural way: free play.
Free play, also called unstructured play, is activity that children choose and direct themselves. It might involve building something out of everyday materials, inventing games with friends or grownups, or creating imaginary worlds. There are no rules to follow unless the children make them up, and no specific goals to meet. The freedom to explore and create is the whole point.
