KUSI / FOX 5 (SAN DIEGO) - If you've spent any time at Del Mar Beach, you may very well have seen Carlsbad residents Koa the 11-yearold chocolate lab surfing the waves and her emergency veterinarian owner Kristina Welsh. Koa happiest on the surfboard. Koa earning a spot in the World Dog Surfing Championships near San Francisco.

"She is my very best friend, and she's my roommate.. I talk to her to like a little person," Welsh sharing on her relationship with Koa.

After being found running across the fast lane on the I-5 as a puppy, Koa was brought to the hospital where veterinarian Kristina Welsh worked.

"That day forward, she was all mine as soon as we made eye contact."

Welsh noticing a lump on Koa back in 2021, eventually diagnosed with cancer, Grade 1 Soft Tissue Sarcoma.
