Every few years, we have to deal with some new diseases and invasive pests, whether it’s something decimating our native dogwoods, our grandparents’ elm trees, spruces, or insect pests going after our vegetables and fruits. However, thanks to dogged scientific research, after a few years, the threats seem to disappear and Mother Nature balances itself out.

But just when you thought nature was giving you a reprieve, along comes a new threat. Now researchers are finding significant, widespread deaths of beech trees in the Delmarva region and beyond, north in Maine, and even in parts of Canada, and points west to eastern Michigan, according to the University of Maryland’s Extension Service.
