The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced an alliance with David Mbewe, leader of the Liberation for Economic Freedom Party (LEFP), after his name was excluded from the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) final list of approved presidential candidates for the September 2025 elections.
Mbewe clarified that his party did not fail to meet MEC’s requirements but had voluntarily decided not to contest the presidential race. “We are surprised when they say we did not meet certain criteria because we ourselves said that we would not contest, as we decided to form an alliance with another party,” Mbewe said.
