As a shopping editor, I've spent years touting at-home DNA kits in gift guides, and I've even given a few to friends and family members myself over the years. I genuinely think they are one of the neatest presents, especially for those hard-to-shop-for folks on your list. So many of us could spend days, years even, combing through our own family history books and government records trying to learn more about where we come from, but all those questions could be answered with one simple cheek swab. But with all the interest I've had in these kits, I've never actually tried one myself.
I'll spend $100 on a gift for my notoriously hard-to-shop-for Dad any day, but coughing up the cash to get myself a DNA kit was always a tough sell for some reason, no matter how interesting I
