Serious problems with patient care have become all too commonplace at the VA Western New York Healthcare System, which has had three interim leaders in the past year.
Western New York is not alone. Across the nation, the VA's health care network is rife with stories of neglect. Veterans endure long waiting periods for life-saving referrals – and sometimes don't receive them in time.
At the Phoenix VA Healthcare System in 2014, whistleblowers revealed that veterans were placed on secret waiting lists and forced to wait months for care, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 veterans. There have been other instances – including at the Manchester VA Medical Center in New Hampshire – of whistleblowers reporting unsafe conditions and other failures of the system.
