Police in Masambanjati, Thyolo, arrested and released on bail a Catholic Priest, Father Daniel Mapwiti of Konzaalendo Parish, on suspicion of impregnating a 16-year-old Standard 7 pupil at Konzaalendo Primary School.

Masambanjati Police publicist, Amos Banda, said the priest allegedly slept with the girl on three occasions. The matter came to light after the girl’s boyfriend ended their relationship, having learnt that the pregnancy was linked to the priest.

It was initially reported to Group Village Headman Kodzaalendo, who allegedly tried to conceal it by asking the priest to compensate the girl’s parents with baskets of flour and a goat before going into hiding.

Police later tracked and arrested the priest.
