LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette Police Officer James Jarrett has been awarded the department's highest honor, the Gold Merit Award.

Jarrett received the award for his bravery during a domestic disturbance in May.

When Officer Jarrett and Officer Cain arrived, they found a man with an axe approaching another person. Jarrett quickly intervened, pushing the intended victim behind him and putting himself in harm's way.

Jarrett was able to overpower the man and handcuff him, preventing any injuries.
