PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Oregon's National Weather Service offices could be hiring again soon.
A source with the National Weather Service Portland office confirmed to KOIN 6 News that they would soon be hiring again, but it was too soon to say how Oregon's four offices will be impacted.
Agency-wide, this will include 450 meteorologists, hydrologists and electronics technicians, over 150 field offices, they said. This includes 126 new positions that were previously approved.
As previously reported by the Washington Post, 600 forecasters across the country were laid off or took early retirement earlier this year as the Department of Government Efficiency tried to cut costs. The cuts left the future of Oregon's Pendleton office uncertain.
