A Southwest Missouri lawmaker is calling for changes to the State Tax Commission.

Representative Dirk Deaton, R-Seneca, told Missourinet affiliate KZRG in Joplin after the commission issued memorandums to 88 counties directing increases in property tax valuations, the move has raised concerns among local leaders and taxpayers.

“We need to reform that we need to clear that up, make bright lines, but it’s your elected county assessor that ought to be making the determination of what your assessed value is,” said Deaton. “I mean, you think by virtue of the name, that’s how it would work as it is. They’re trying to threaten and cajole.”
