Dozens of child care employees across the state are slated to lose access to a government program that helps them afford the cost of day care for their own kids so they can remain in the workforce.

A federal grant heralded by child care providers as a game changer will soon be coming to an end and, with it, the little bit of financial breathing room that it created for their businesses.

The Department of Public Health and Human Services sent a July 28 email to providers informing them that new applications for funding to offset tuition for children of employees would not be accepted beyond the end of the month. Existing subsidies will be honored through the year’s end.
