Kate Forbes has declined to back either of the two favourites to succeed John Swinney as the next SNP leader - but has left the door open to a political comeback in the future. ‌

The Deputy First Minister shocked Scottish politics earlier this week when she announced she would not stand for re-election as an MSP when voters go to the polls in May next year. ‌

But when asked at a Fringe show in Edinburgh tonight if she would back Stephen Flynn or Mairi McAllan to become the next SNP leader, Forbes said: "I won't answer that, because I would question the premise in the first place." She added: "So in questioning the premise there are going to be two options, I think I'll wait and see what the real options are." ‌
