The town of Castine is asking drivers to avoid a major connecting road because of a wildfire that started Wednesday and was still burning on Thursday.
The 3.5-acre fire in the woods near Route 199, 166A and Dunc’s Meadow was still flaring up on Thursday afternoon, according to Town Manager Derik Goodine’s posts on the town Facebook page.
He asked travelers to avoid Castine Road from Dunbar Road to Route 166 until further notice while firefighters tamp down flareups and smoldering brush.
The Maine Forest Service and multiple area fire departments also responded to the fire Wednesday.
Crews were prepared to respond to flareups overnight Wednesday, and on Thursday afternoon were spraying water on hotspots and attempting to widen a fire break with a bulldozer, according to Goodine.
