A recent article in the Herald-Tribune documented the adverse impacts to public libraries if Congress votes in September to eliminate the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which helps fund libraries in all 50 states.
Across the country, critical library services such as internet access, literacy programs and digital e-books will be reduced or eliminated due to an executive order signed March 14.
These services are particularly vital for children, students, job seekers and seniors.
For Sarasota County’s public library system, the loss of IMLS funding means a $300,000 annual reduction in the books and materials budget.
People in Sarasota County value our libraries.
