SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A South Bend man charged with murder in a shooting at a northwest side apartment complex nearly two years ago is still awaiting trial.
26-year-old Khalyiah Bell was killed in the shooting back on Nov. 3, 2023, at Beacon Heights Apartments.
The man who police charged with murder in connection to the case, Juwan Dockery, was arrested just days after the shooting.
Dockery, who was 22 at the time of the shooting, had a trial set for spring of last year, but that never happened.
We’re learning from court filings the trial was canceled in part because an evaluation was needed to look into Dockery’s competency and sanity.
Late last summer, a court ruled he be admitted to a psychiatric institution after doctors found he was not competent to stand trial.
