The first migrants arriving on small boats have been detained under a new ‘one in, one out’ deal struck last month between France and the UK.

Yesterday more than 150 people were detected making the Channel crossing – it’s not clear how many have now been apprehended.

The Conservatives say it’s just a ‘token handful’, but the government insists it will prove to be a deterrent. And as part of the deal, migrants in France now have the opportunity to apply online for a safe and legal route into the UK.
