KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A dog died in a house fire Thursday morning in Overland Park, Kansas.
Shortly before 10 a.m., the Overland Park Fire Department said firefighters from Overland Park, Shawnee and Lenexa were called to a house fire at 82nd and Hadley streets.
When fire crews arrived, they reported smoke coming from the attic of a single-story home.
Firefighters began attacking a kitchen fire, while additional crews searched the home. It took about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control, according to the fire department.
Four dogs and two rabbits were retrieved from the home. Unfortunately, one of the dogs later died, the fire department said.
Investigators believe the fire was started by one of the dogs attempting to retrieve dog treats that were left on the stovetop.
