A suspect is in custody after a fatal double shooting on Detroit's east side late Thursday morning, the Detroit Police Department said.

At 10:57 a.m., police received calls of shots fired and one possibly down in the 3800 block of Bewick Street, Deputy Chief Arnold Williams said during a media briefing. When officers arrived on the scene, they found two people in the street who had been fatally shot.

After a preliminary examination, authorities determined one person shot the first victim, and that individual was later shot by someone else, Williams said. Police say it was possibly in self-defense.

Two weapons were recovered at the scene. One suspect, who police say has a concealed pistol license, is in custody.
