Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has been named to the 2025 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Preseason Watch List, placing him among the top 36 returning quarterbacks in college football. The junior from Little Elm, Texas, was a semifinalist for the award in 2024 and enters this season with high expectations as he leads the Sooners’ offense.

The list, released by the Davey O’Brien Foundation, was compiled by a subset of the National Selection Committee and includes players based on career performance and projected impact this fall. Mateer is one of six returning semifinalists from last season, and one of eight quarterbacks from the Big 12 to be honored more than any other conference.
