Having reliable childcare will allow parents to look for permanent housing, employment, or attend school. “A lot of our parents are single parents so they don't have anyone to rely on to take care of their kids,” said Karen Zelaya, case manager at Hope the Mission. People working in the childcare industry say they hope it’s a growing model to help unhoused families.

Continuing childcare: The shelter is partnering with the Child Care Resource Center to run Head Start classrooms for 24 toddlers and pre-schoolers. The group will also help families connect to other subsidized child care services when they leave the shelter.
