For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved reading newspapers. As a child growing up in Rochester my family had both the morning newspaper, The Democrat & Chronicle and the evening paper, The Times Union delivered to our house.

I preferred the morning paper; I loved the sports scores and stories, the national and local news and of course the daily comics. Some of the comic strips from that era are still around today – “Beetle Bailey” and “Blondie” come to mind. Beetle Bailey began as a college student; Dagwood and Blondie started off dating but unmarried.

I also had a special relationship with “Pogo,” “Li’l Abner,” “Peanuts” and my all-time favorite, “Smokey Stover.” At various points during my years in Rochester I delivered the morning and evening papers. Back in those days newspaper car
