PRESIDENT TRUMP on Thursday ordered the Commerce Department to initiate a new census, escalating the redistricting battles raging across the U.S.

The census, like redistricting, typically happens at the start of each decade.

But Trump's order for a new census comes as Texas seeks to redraw its district lines ahead of the 2026 midterm elections in an effort to produce more favorable results for Republicans.

In his statement, Trump emphasized that those in the country illegally will not be counted in the new census, underscoring GOP complaints that Democrats are over-represented in Congress because of the millions of illegal immigrants who have passed into the country in recent years.
