The Government has responded to a petition calling for all individuals above the State Pension age to receive a council tax reduction. The petition, which gathered over 10,000 signatures, urged for everyone over the State Pension age to be given a discounted council tax rate, prompting a response from HM Treasury.
The petition called on the Government to pass legislation ensuring that pensioners aren't forced to allocate "a very significant percentage" of their income towards this tax. David Papworth, who started the petition, voiced his concern, saying: "I feel that current council tax rates do not take pension incomes into account. This means some pensioners are having to pay what I think is a very significant percentage of their pension towards council tax.He further added: "When many
